# The phone in your browser

> Answering, dialling and handling calls without a handset.

Every page has a phone down the right-hand side. It registers as your
extension, so a call that rings your desk phone rings here too — the first to
answer wins.

## The screen

The dark strip at the top is status, the way a desk phone carries one:

* **READY**, INCOMING, ON A CALL — what the phone is doing.
* **Two squares, 1 and 2** — your lines. Filled green is the line you are on,
  outlined green is a call waiting behind it, a dark square is free. Click one
  to switch; the other call holds.
* The codec in use and your extension number.

Below it, how long this call has been up — or, off-call, when the registration
is next refreshed.

## Dialling

Type into the number field and press **Enter**. The keypad works too, and sends
DTMF once you are connected.

<Note>
  **Ctrl** with a number opens the phone and starts dialling from anywhere in
  the panel, without clicking into the field first. Mid-call the same chord
  sends that digit as DTMF, and **Ctrl+Enter** dials what you have typed.

## During a call

Under the keypad: **Hold**, **Transfer**, **Conf** and **Park**.

* **Hold** — the caller waits on your line, hearing hold music.
* **Transfer** — send them to another extension.
* **Conf** — with two calls up this becomes **Merge**, and puts both parties
  and you in one room. With one call it dials somebody in.
* **Park** — puts the caller in a numbered slot and frees your line. **Anyone**
  can pick them up by dialling that slot, and parked calls are listed under the
  keypad with the number to dial.

  The keys are dead until a call is up, and say so on hover. They act on the
  call the switch says is yours, so a call on your desk phone is controllable
  from here as well.

## Two calls at once

A second call arriving while you are busy takes line 2 and rings. Answering it
holds the first. The line squares switch between them, and **Merge** joins
them.

<Note>
  Merging mixes three people together, which is real work for the switch — so
  on a very busy node **Merge** can come back with *"this node has no capacity
  to mix another conference right now"*. **Both of your calls are still
  connected** when that happens, and both people can still hear you: nothing is
  moved until there is room for it. Wait a moment and press it again.

## In a conference

Once your calls are merged, or you have joined a conference room, the phone
panel shows **In the room**: everyone in it, who is talking, who is muted.
You can **Mute**, **Unmute** or **Kick** each person, **Lock** the room so
nobody else joins, and mute every participant at once.

On the keypad inside a room: `*1` mutes you, `*2` unmutes you. If you joined
with a moderator PIN you also have `*5` to lock or unlock, `*7` to mute or
unmute everyone but the moderators, and `*0` to end the room for everybody.

## Settings

The gear button:

* **Microphone** and **Speaker** — which devices to use, with a test for each.
* **Ring on** and **Ring volume** — which device rings, and how loudly.
* **Preferred codec** — what to ask for first. The extension's codec profile on
  the server bounds what the switch will accept, so this chooses within it.
* **Debug** — shows the SIP log and connection details under the phone, and the
  app version. Recording never stops, so switching it on only decides whether
  you are looking at it.

<Note>
  Browsers do not play sound until you have interacted with the page. If a call
  arrives before you have clicked anything, the phone says *"incoming call —
  click anywhere for sound"* rather than ringing silently.

## Desktop notifications

Ask for them in settings and an incoming call raises one even when the tab is
in the background. The browser decides: if you refuse the prompt, only the ring
remains.

## Turning it off

The power button beside the gear unregisters this browser. It is not offered
mid-call — unregistering would take the call with it.
