# During a call

> The in-call screen: mute, keypad, audio route, hold, a second call, and recording.

The call screen is not a page you navigated to. It appears over whatever you
were doing the moment a call goes live, and it goes away when the call does.
Press **back** and it minimises to a green bar across the top — *Ongoing call ·
Marcus Delaney* with the clock still running — rather than dropping you out of
the call.

## What the top of the screen tells you

The status line reads **Calling…**, **Ringing…**, **On hold · 2:14**, or
**Call ended**, with the running duration under it.

On a FireTone call there is also a quality pill: four signal bars, the
round-trip time in milliseconds, and **the codec that actually won the
negotiation** — read from the live media session, not from what was offered.
If you asked for Opus and the pill says G.711, the PBX transcoded, and that is
worth knowing. On a carrier call the pill reads `Cellular` and your network's
name instead.

## The six controls

* **Mute** — closes the microphone at the media stack, not at the system, so it
holds on a FireTone call where the phone's own mute does nothing.
* **Keypad** — sends DTMF, and echoes back what it has sent so you can see what
  an IVR received.
* **Speaker** — cycles the audio route. With a headset connected it is labelled
with the route actually in force rather than guessing.
* **Hold** — greyed out on a call that cannot be held.
* **Add call** — minimises the call and takes you to the keypad. The first call
appears as a strip you can **Swap** back to, or end on its own.
* **Record** — FireTone calls only. On a carrier call it is disabled and says
  why. See [recording](/mobile/recording).

## Two calls

Dial a second call and the first goes on hold. The held call sits in a strip
above the controls with **Swap** and its own end button. Ending the call in
front of you leaves the held one where it is; it does not resume by itself.

<Note>
Merging two calls into a conference, and transferring a call to another
extension, are not in this build. The browser phone has both — see
  [the phone in your browser](/agent/the-phone).
</Note>

## An incoming call

The incoming screen says **INCOMING FIRETONE CALL** or **INCOMING CALL** so you
know which line it arrived on before you answer. Alongside Accept and Decline:

* **Message** declines the call and opens a text to the caller.
* **Remind me** declines it and puts a reminder on your phone in 15 minutes.

On Android, if FireTone is your default phone app, all of this happens on the
lock screen like any other call. On the iPhone it arrives through CallKit, so
it looks and behaves like a normal iPhone call — including being answerable
from a car or a watch.
