# Recording calls

> What gets recorded, who decides, and where the files go.

FireTone can record a call and keep the file on the phone. It never leaves the
phone by itself — there is no upload, no sync and no server copy.

<Warning>
  Recording a call without telling the other person is illegal in many places,
  and the rules differ by state as well as by country. FireTone will record
  what you ask it to; whether you may is yours to know.

## What can be recorded

**FireTone calls only.** A carrier call is handled by the phone's own telephony
stack, which does not hand the audio to an app — on both platforms, and by
design. The Record button on a carrier call is disabled and says so.

## Who decides

Three settings, and they resolve in this order:

1. **The call is a carrier call** → never recorded. Nothing below applies.
2. **The contact's own setting** — *Always* or *Never* on their page. Either one
   wins, in its own direction.
3. **Settings › Auto-record FireTone calls** — *Off*, *Ask once per contact*, or
   *Always*.

*Ask once per contact* means what it says: you are asked the first time, and the
answer is kept — against that contact if FireTone knows who they are, and
app-wide if it does not. You are not asked again.

## The files

Microphone and far end are mixed into one file — Ogg/Opus, or `.m4a` where the
platform prefers it.

* **Android** — the private app folder by default. **Settings › Recording
  folder** lets you pick a folder of your own, and the app keeps the permission
  to it.
* **iPhone** — **Files › FireTone › Recordings**, which is read-only in the app
  and says so.

**Settings › Recordings** lists everything on the phone, grouped by who you
spoke to. Tap one for the player: play, scrub, **Share**, **Copy path**,
**Delete**. It will not play during a call — the audio device is busy with
something more important.

You can also reach a single recording from its row in Recents, by swiping the
row to the right.

## Per-contact exceptions

**Settings › Per-contact recording** is where the exceptions live, with the list
of everybody who has one. It is the same setting as the chooser on a contact's
page, gathered in one place so you can see what you have set without going
person by person.
