# Billing

> What the organisation has been charged, what is left, and why two of the figures on the screen say withheld rather than zero.

**Billing** is the organisation's own money: what calls have come to, what
credit is left, and the prices behind both.

## The figures across the top

|                      |                                                  |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| **Revenue** | what these calls were charged to you |
| **Carrier cost**     | withheld                                         |
| **Margin**           | withheld                                         |
| **Billable minutes** | what was rated, not what was talked |
| **AI spend** | what virtual agents drew, where the module is on |

Two of those are the operator's own commercial position: what they pay
carriers, and what they keep on top. Serving them to a tenant would disclose
the operator's buy price to the customer paying it.

<Note>
  **Withheld is not zero.** The figure is left out and the panel says so. A
  zero there would read as "this call cost nothing", which is a false
  statement about somebody's business rather than a missing one.
</Note>

## The balance

Your balance, your credit limit and anything **held**.

**Held** is credit reserved against calls in progress: money not yet spent
and no longer available. It is what stops more calls being started than the
balance can finish.

A prepaid organisation is checked **before** a call is placed, not discovered
mid-call. A caller refused for credit hears *"your balance is not enough to
make this call"*, and a number with no price on your rate card gets *"calls
to this destination are not allowed on your account"*. Both sentences can be
replaced with your own recording.

<Note>
  A postpaid organisation carries no balance and accrues instead, so the
  balance card is empty rather than zero.
</Note>

## Your prices

The rates list is **your side of the pricing**: what you are charged per
destination, with the connect fee, the per-minute price and the increment.

The increment is read as *minimum / step*: `60/60` bills a whole minute at a
time, `30/6` charges at least 30 seconds and then in 6-second steps.

The operator's own cost cards are not shown, and the **Rate cards** panel
says so rather than appearing empty.

## AI is priced separately

Minutes and tokens are rated on different cards and appear as different
figures. The **charge on a call record is telephony only**; a call answered
by a virtual agent carries its AI cost alongside rather than folded in.

Where the organisation uses its own provider key, the provider bills it
directly and FireTone shows the usage without a charge. See [what AI
costs](/tenant/ai/what-ai-costs).

## Per-call figures

This screen is the total. What a single call was charged is on that call, in
[call history](/tenant/inbound/call-history) — and the charge column is there
for everybody who can read call history, including agents.
