# Outbound routing

> Which carrier an outgoing call uses, and in what order.

Outbound routing decides which carrier carries a call that leaves. Where an
incoming call goes is set on [Phone numbers](/tenant/inbound/numbers). An
organisation's own login sees this screen as **Outgoing calls**.

## Choose how calls go out

**Outbound routing → Choose how calls go out**: pick which calls (all of
them, a country, or numbers starting with certain digits) and which of your
provider's options they use — *Standard*, *Premium*, *Call Center*, or
whatever your provider offers — with an optional backup if the first cannot
connect. A country or a start of a number beats "all calls" for the calls it
covers. **Try a number** shows how a call would go before you save.

You choose among the names your provider offers; which carrier carries each is
theirs to manage. Your choices appear in the list with a remove button.

**Changing a choice.** Use the pencil on a choice to switch it to another of
your provider's options, or remove it. The operator can edit any rule in
place: its numbers, which organisation it's for, each leg's carrier and
service level, and whether a leg is used at all.

The list follows the organisation chosen in the page header. It shows that
organisation's own rules and the shared rules that apply to it, the same ones
its calls use.

**Only what you choose is used.** A call goes through the option its rule
names, and fails over only to the backup you chose. A number no choice covers
is **refused**, with a message to the caller, unless your organisation has a
trunk of its own. To set a **default** for every number you haven't covered,
choose **All outgoing calls**.

## Outbound

A **trunk group** orders your organisation's own carriers, and they are used
only for numbers none of your choices above covers. Within the group: a carrier
you supply yourself comes first, then the order your provider set, then the
cheaper one — price decides between carriers of equal standing, not over them.
The operator's shared carriers are used only through a choice above, never by
default.

<Note>
A trunk you supply yourself is preferred over the operator's, and it is tried
even when your balance is empty — those calls cost the platform nothing, so
refusing them would be charging you for the privilege of using your own
  carrier account.
</Note>

## What a caller hears when nothing matches

A number that resolves to nothing gets *"that was an invalid entry"* and a clean
hangup rather than silence or a stuck call.
